Photoacoustic contrast for molecular imaging with photoacoustics

Nanoparticles

Seeing molecules with nanoparticle contrast using photoacoustics

Nano-scale materials are increasingly used as molecular imaging agents for photoacoustics due to their very high absorption of light in the NIR range and their customizeability in terms of size and surface chemistry.  They are often biologically inert and can be modified to allow for long circulation times in vivo.  They are small enough to extravasate, allowing labelling of tissue for a variety of applications including:

  • Cell-tracking
  • Diagnosis and treatment (theranostics) for a variety of diseases
  • Drug delivery and microdistribution

In addition, the Vevo LAZR-X has tools for characterizing nanoparticles in vitro, saving this characterization into the software and performing subsequent spectral unmixing in vivo.
