Benefits of Cardiac Function by Simspson Method vs B-Mode Parasternal Long Axis

This study by Heinen et al. compares cardiac functional data in a myocardial infarct model acquired by B-Mode in parasternal long axis (PSLAX) versus Simpson method, versus MRI.

Article Summary:

  • Sought to prove if Simpson method is significantly more sensitive at detecting changes in cardiac function
  • Used measurements by MRI as gold standard comparison
  • Parameters investigated included: ejection fraction (EF), end diastolic volume (EDV) and end systolic volume (ESV)
  • EF by Simpson method showed higher correlation with MRI
  • Significance demonstrated using an experimental model where the cardioprotective effect of treatment was only detected by Simpson method and MRI
  • Postulated that altered left ventricular geometry in the infarct model leads to the lowered sensitivity in functional measurement from B-Mode PSLAX
  • Suggests that the ideal method for detecting cardiac function would be in real-time 3D

Conclusion:

Cardiac disease models that cause ventricular deformity necessitate more sensitive methods of detecting cardiac functional changes than 2D PSLAX.
